“… And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” (Matthew 25:46)
If I were to ask you “Are you a good person?” what would you say? Most people would say “Yeah, sure…I haven’t killed anyone.”
But let me ask you, “Have you ever lied? Stolen?” Jesus said, “If you look at a woman with lust, you’ve already committed adultery with her in your heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28)
Have you ever looked with lust?
So, in God’s eyes are you really a good person? If you were to stand before Him, would He pronounce you righteous or guilty?
Would you deserve heaven or hell? God, just like a righteous judge, can’t just let the guilty go free.
If you said, “I’d be guilty deserving of hell” you’d be right! And you already know this is true of everyone!
Paul the apostle wrote, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Paul again wrote, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
And Isaiah wrote 700 years before Jesus came, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Everyone has sinned against the Lord, but as Isaiah prophesied, the Lord has laid all our sins on Jesus.
That’s why Jesus came! Because God loves you, He sent the Lord Jesus, fully God and man, to take God’s wrath in your place on the cross (Isaiah 53:4-6; Romans 5:8).
And to prove that God received Jesus’ sacrifice, God raised Jesus from the dead! (John 2:19; Matthew 28:1-15)
To receive eternal life, trust in Christ alone (2 Corinthians 1:9; not your good works, which are just filthy rags, Isaiah 64:6), submit everything to Him (repent of sin, Mark 8:35), and ask Him to save you from your rebellion against Him (Romans. 10:9-13).
Read Luke 18:10–14 and cry out like that notorious sinner and receive God’s mercy! That sinner said, “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” And He’ll be merciful to you too.
